| Hello All, I have a 1992TT with ~71k miles. I'm just getting this car back into daily driving shape after keeping it in the garage for many years. I've been driving it 3 or 4 days a week for the last 2 months with no problems. Last week I started it up in the morning and left it to warm up with the windshield defogger on for a couple of minutes while I took out the trash. It ran as expected then I heard a squealing sound like a slipping belt and the engine died. It restarted fine but when I turned the windshield defogger on again the squealing came back and the engine bogged. The engine will run with the defogger on if I give it some gas but it won't idle in this state. I turn off the defogger and the car runs as expected. Turning on the A/C causes the same squealing and bogging of the engine as the windshield defogger. My question is what are the likely causes of this? I'm thinking bad A/C compressor or bad A/C compressor clutch but I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this to narrow it down. Could it be as simple as a loose belt? I have the shop manual but it is not useful for symptoms like this and I have not found anything like this in a search of the archives on this forum. Any advice on how to troubleshoot and repair this would be greatly appreciated.
